What Is a Garden Pod?

A garden pod, or garden room, is the perfect solution if you’re thinking of adding extra space to your property, but don’t want the hassle (or price tag) that comes with major building work. These standalone structures are built or placed in a garden, separate from the main house, and are typically constructed using timber frames, ranging from small, pod-like installations to larger room-sized buildings.

What Can You Use a Garden Pod For?

Garden pods are designed to be a blend of functionality and aesthetics, offering a private and quiet outdoor retreat. The uses for them are virtually limitless. Here are a few ideas as to what you can transform your self-contained unit into:

    • A home office
    • Home gym
    • Yoga/meditation room
    • Reading room
    • Games room
    • Playroom
    • Art studio
    • Recording studio
    • Hobby space
    • Guest room

If you purchase one of our eco-friendly garden pods then we’d love to see what you transform it into!

What Are The Benefits of Owning a Garden Pod?

Naturally, the best thing about owning a garden pod is the extra space it provides. They can be used for a wide range of purposes and are adaptable; a pod can transform from a productive workspace by day to a cosy entertainment area by night, for example. They’re also an ideal place for guests to stay, if you don’t have a spare room in the house.

As Palm Spas’ garden pods arrive fully assembled, there is no need to worry about any construction or disruption. They’re also a most cost-effective alternative to traditional home extensions, with our small units costing less than £4,000.

These outdoor spaces can also add value to a property, making them a smart investment. With customisable designs and features, these structures not only blend seamlessly into your garden, but also enhance its aesthetic appeal.

Can It Be Customised To Suit My Preferences?

Absolutely. Our garden pods are highly customisable to meet individual needs and preferences. At Palm Spas, we have seven weather-resistant pod colours to choose from, though we can create pods in all colours, so if you need something more bespoke just give us a call. The frame colour, flooring and electrics can also be selected, with each unit coming with a 16A hookup connector, 2 x twin 13A mains sockets and an interior light as standard.

Can You Install a Shower/Toilet Into a Garden Pod?

Yes, you can, but it does require careful planning. You’ll need to consider plumbing connections, drainage, and ventilation. As the pipework from your house to your garden room needs to be buried a certain depth, it’s best to consult a professional.

Can You Have a Garden Pod With a Log Burner?

This is possible, but again, it’s best to consult a professional to ensure proper ventilation and adherence to safety regulations. Alternative heating options like electric heaters or underfloor heating might be more straightforward and safer choices.

    Are Garden Pods Insulated?

Yes. The garden pods are fully insulated all around the sides, roof, and base using recycled drinks bottles!

Do You Need Planning Permission for a Garden Room?

In many cases, garden pods do not require planning permission as they fall under permitted development rights. However, this will depend on the size, height, functionality, and location of the pod, as well as any restrictions on your property. For instance, if your home is a listed building or in a conservation area, you might need to seek permission.

You also don’t need planning permission if it is to be used for overnight accommodation every now and again, however, if you intend to use it as a permanent, self-contained living space, you’d need to speak with your local authority.

How Long Will My Garden Pod Last?

With proper maintenance, a well-built garden pod or room can last anywhere from 20-40 years. The lifespan depends on factors such as the quality of materials and construction, protection from the elements, and usage and wear and tear. All of our premium garden pods combine modern design, functionality, and durability, and are made from robust and eco-friendly materials.

Do Garden Pods Add Value to a House?

Yes. A well-designed and constructed garden pod can add around 5-10% value to a property. The added appeal of extra living space, especially in urban areas where space is at a premium, makes them an attractive feature for potential buyers.

How much value will depend on certain factors such as the quality and size of the structure, how well it integrates with the property, the additional functionality it provides, and local property market conditions.

Will Owning a Garden Room Increase My Council Tax?

It depends on the functionality of the garden room. If you are using it as a place to sleep, you will need to declare this, and it could affect the cost of your annual council tax.

If it’s used as a home office, or for other non-residential purposes, it’s less likely to affect your council tax.

Using a garden pod or room as a business premise, such as a salon, introduces additional considerations and requirements. You are likely to need to apply for planning permission, and pay business rates on the structure, separate from your home’s council tax. It is always best to consult with your local authority first.
